KommentarSCHLAFLOS
Das Bett in Geschichte und Gegenwartskunst

Donnerstag, 29. Jänner 2015 | 19 Uhr

Es sprechen
Agnes Husslein-Arco, Direktorin
Mario Codognato, Kurator

SLEEPLESS
The Bed in History and Contemporary Art

Thursday, 29th January 2015 | 7pm

Opening remarks by:
Agnes Husslein-Arco, Director
Mario Codognato, Curator
Klaus Spiess, Professor for Medical Psychology

With a performance by Borjana Ventzislavova.

As a stage for birth, love, illness, and death, as well as a place of loneliness, violence, and historic moments, the bed is one of the most reproduced objects in art and a common metaphor for the human condition. The majority of people are born on beds and it is here that the inexplicable miracle of life both begins and ends.
The 21er Haus is placing a focus on the bed and its various interpretations in paintings, drawings, photographs, and video, as well as in ready-mades, and as a starting point for installations and sculptures. Ranging from iconographic key works to original, historical objects, the beds in the exhibition will be subdivided into themes and arranged according to visual associations.
With works by Diane Arbus, Pierre Bonnard, Agostino Carracci, Gustave Courbet, Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud, Artemisia Gentileschi, Philip Guston, Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama, Maria Lassnig, Robert Rauschenberg, Thomas Ruff, Egon Schiele, Antoni Tàpies, Franz West and many more.

The exhibition is running from 30th January until 7th of June 2015.
